Standard & Poor's Equity Research reiterated its "positive" rating for the computer storage and peripherals segment after recent industry data indicated a 5% rise in 2004 global factory sales. "Moreover, EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ) during the fourth quarter widened its market share lead over its nearest competitors and now possesses 22% of the market," said S&P Equity Research. "We see growth in 2005 being driven by our expectation of the ongoing expansion of newly created content, as well as more stringent regulatory requirements." Banc of America Securities remains defensive on computer hardware companies in its coverage universe, saying it prefers share gain and product cycles stories, such as Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ), EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ) and Xyratex (nasdaq: XRTX - news - people ). The research firm maintained "buy" ratings on the three companies with respective target prices of $44, $15.25 and $21. For Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ), the research firm said iPod shuffle demand continues to be strong with units sold in the second quarter expected around 1.2 million. Banc of America expects Apple to gain share in music downloads in the quarter. The research firm said Apple's expansion of the Mac Mini channel is likely to happen over time and not at the drastic pace of the iPod. Banc of America reiterated a "buy" rating and $48.50 target price on Apple. For Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), the research firm reiterated a "neutral" rating and $23.50 target price, saying that management isn't predisposed to breaking up the company. In the drives industry, Banc of America said companies are benefiting from pricing as companies are expected to continue spending to increase density of drives and efficiency of manufacturing lines. Overall, Banc of America's top picks in the enterprise hardware sector are Dell and EMC. Standard & Poor's Equity Research reiterated a "strong buy" rating on EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ) and raised estimates on the information storage and management company after it reported strong fourth-quarter earnings. S&P Equity Research said, "Despite pricing pressure at the high-end of the market, gross margins widened to 52.4%, marking the ninth straight quarter of sequential improvement." The research firm raised the 2005 earnings estimate to 50 cents per share from 48 cents.
