News & Analysis: Technology Solectron's Quarter Looks Brighter By Scott Moritz Senior Writer 11/10/2006 9:29 AM EST Click here for more stories by Scott Moritz Solectron (SLR - commentary - Cramer's Take) says it will hit or exceed earlier earnings guidance for the current quarter by deferring a Cisco (CSCO - commentary - Cramer's Take) imposed cost-cutting squeeze. The Milpitas, Calif. contract manufacturer said it delayed a new "supply chain" program with Cisco, one of its largest customers. The production adjustment will take effect in the "coming quarters," and as a result the company says it going to meet or possibly beat its prior guidance. The company's target was a nickel profit on sales of $2.7 billion for its fiscal first-quarter, which ends on Nov. 24. Those numbers are in line with analysts expectations, according to Reuters Research. Solectron shares rose 7 cents, or 2%, to $3.34 in pre-market trading Friday. |

Credit Suisse First Boston sees positives in the fiscal third-quarter report from Cisco Systems (nasdaq: CSCO - news - people ) that will benefit Solectron (nyse: SLR - news - people ), Celestica (nyse: CLS - news - people ) and Jabil Circuit (nyse: JBL - news - people ). CSFB said Cisco's router strength relative to switches is positive for Solectron, "which we believe has a disproportionate share of Cisco's new router lineup," although Celestica is a secondary beneficiary. Cisco's strong router orders also bode well for Solectron and Celestica, the research firm said. CSFB noted that Cisco's storage orders were up by the mid single-digits quarter over quarter--a positive for Jabil Circuit, "for whom we believe Cisco's storage switches comprise one fourth of Cisco revenue." Overall, strong inventory management "is a positive for all suppliers, reflecting EMS (electronics manufacturing services) sell-in matching OEM sell-through," CSFB said. |

comments from Merrill Lynch: "The research firm said Solectron (nyse: SLR - news - people ) "continues to make progress improving efficiencies" at its operations in Guadalajara, where the company operates six facilities and employs 5,200 people. Solectron continues to produce wireline telecom equipment in Guadalajara for Nortel Networks (nyse: NT - news - people ), including supporting the company's Calgary facility. Solectron sales to Nortel will decline as the year progresses with Flextronics International (nasdaq: FLEX - news - people ) ramping up production for Nortel, but Solectron apparently will remain a Nortel supplier" |

Wed 6:29am SLR Solectron downgraded by Robert W. Baird, Raymond James and KeyBanc Capital Mkts / McDonald - Briefing.com Here's why: "Contract electronics manufacturer Solectron (SLR) tumbled 7% in early dealings after sales and the forecast missed Wall Street estimates. It cited "greater than expected weakness in the consumer market for set-top boxes and 3-G wireless handsets, as well as in the semiconductor capital equipment sector of the industrial market." Networking sales also fell short. The company expects growth to resume sometime after the next quarter." |

SLR: turnaround in sight ? bullish comments from TheStreet.com: "Solectron (SLR:NYSE - commentary - research) is another turnaround position my firm has established in its portfolio. The current $5 price seems expensive for a fiscal 2005 consensus EPS estimate of 26 cents untaxed. Here the market is in a normal turnaround valuation mode. My firm's estimate of "normalized" fully taxed profits, assuming 15% revenue growth over the next 2 years, is 50 cents per share. That run rate could be hit in six quarters. A prominent Wall Street firm recently reiterated its $10 price target on the stock over the next year. It would not surprise me to see the stock go from the outhouse to the penthouse in that short time."

Jfh, Indeed SLR's share price has heartened me somewhat but as you noted, we bought far too soon. Only need another 1.30 to get even though. I continued to hold through the ride down as I could find no seriously bad problem with the company. Just bought too soon.

SLR (in Forbes yesterday): "Solectron (nyse: SLR - news - people ) will report fiscal third-quarter earnings. Wall Street expects the provider of electronics manufacturing and integrated supply chain services to break even on a per-share basis, compared with a loss of 10 cents in the year-ago quarter. On June 16 Solectron said it reached a definitive agreement to sell its Force Computers embedded computing business to Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) for an undisclosed figure. Motorola will integrate Force into its Motorola Computer Group, which provides embedded computing products and services to original equipment manufacturers. The transaction is expected to close in the third calendar quarter of 2004. Solectron shares ended at $5.09, down 4 cents."

From the yahoo msg board: "SLR showed definate signs of accumulation early April and at higher PPS.Institutional holdings still in the 80% + range.Stock is drifting lower to what level I don`t know.Been adding to my position since $5.50 and last at 5.40.Looking to add again at the lower $5`s.Volume on this slide is light and could be close to a pivot point to the upside.Needs a catlyst or news for the turn.Still worth holding at this level, cheap relative to risk/reward ratio for med. to long term oppurtunity."
