During the same period in the prior year, the net loss was $19.5 million, or 11 cents a share. Amkor said quarterly revenue rose to $713.8 million from $549.6 million in the prior year. For the fourth quarter, the company sees sequential sales falling 3% to 5%, and per-share net income of 20 cents to 24 cents. | ||

Standard & Poor's Equity Research maintained a "hold" rating on Amkor Technology (nasdaq: AMKR - news - people ) and said "operating conditions are bottoming." Amkor's first-quarter loss per share was slightly wider than the research firm's estimate, but revenue was slightly higher, "reflecting, we believe, market share gains in graphics and gaming applications." S&P Equity Research said that Amkor indicated that customers' forecasts rose over the last three months, "largely as a result of inventory reductions, in our opinion." (AMKR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , a provider of semiconductor packaging and test services, on Wednesday reported a quarterly loss weighed by a $50 million settlement with Fujitsu Ltd. (6702.T: Quote, Profile, Research) over allegedly defective parts. The loss in the first quarter reached $119 million, or 68 cents a share, compared to a year-earlier profit of $10.9 million, or 6 cents a share. | ||

Associated Press market report: (excerpt) ..."Even Amkor Technology Inc. saw gains on the day, closing up 7.7 percent at $3.65. The move comes despite the company cutting its third-quarter outlook due to an industrywide slowdown. Amkor, which provides semiconductor packaging and testing, now sees a loss of 13 cents per share on revenue of $480 million, below previous loss guidance of 7 cents to 9 cents on revenue flat with $492.5 million reported in the second quarter. In a report, Smith Barney analyst Glen Yeung said the deceleration of chip sales was in line with what he expected. He said the "best of the cycle has past" but he does not anticipate any negative growth for the sector. "We continue to believe that June was the peak for the industry and results in the coming months should continue to show growth, albeit at a decelerated rate," he said in the report." | ||
