Altera (nasdaq: ALTR - news - people ) said it expects second-quarter sales at the high end of previously stated guidance. The stock was little changed in after-hours trading. Earlier today, J.P. Morgan Securities maintained an "overweight" rating on the stock. "Our checks indicate business at Altera is tracking to the high end of the company's expectations," it said. Citing improving business conditions, J.P. Morgan raised the second-quarter revenue estimate on Altera to $280 million from $275 million, but maintained the earnings-per-share estimate of 17 cents. The research firm said Altera's strength is due in part to share gains from its low-end programmable logic devices such as the Cyclone and MAX families.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Semiconductor maker Altera Corp. reported a 9 percent bump in first-quarter profit on Monday on similar revenue growth.
The company earned $63.8 million, or 17 cents per share, up from $58.8 million, or 15 cents per share, a year earlier.

Sales rose 9 percent to $264.8 million from $242.9 million as Altera's high-density Stratix and low-cost Cyclone products posted strong results.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 15 cents per share on sales of $254.4 million.

The company's results were helped by its 20 percent tax rate, lower than the 25 percent rate from a year ago. Altera said the rate was 1 percent lower than prior guidance.

Altera shares rose 47 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $19.72 in after-hours trading. The stock closed up 24 cents at $19.25 on the Nasdaq.

Altera (ALTR: news, chart, profile) said first-quarter sales will be $254.4 million, or 6 percent higher than the fourth quarter. It had earlier projected sales would only climb 1 to 3 percent.

"Sales to customers in the communications market segment have rebounded more sharply than initially anticipated," the San Jose, Calif.-based company said in its midquarter update.

Chipmakers Xilinx (nasdaq: XLNX - news - people ) and Altera (nasdaq: ALTR - news - people ) will each provide business updates for the current quarter. Xilinx will discuss its fourth-quarter outlook on March 8 after the close of trading. Consensus estimates call for earnings of 18 cents per share on $367 million in sales. Banc of America Securities expects in-line guidance from both companies but noted that it prefers Xilinx over Altera. Last month, Goldman Sachs raised 2005 and 2006 earnings-per-share estimates for Altera to 55 cents and 68 cents from 52 cents and 65 cents, respectively. "We maintain in-line on Altera given the stock's premium valuation and our expectation that earnings momentum will likely remain tepid in the near term due to general market choppiness, high turns requirement and potential overhang related to upcoming employee stock options expensing," it said. "However, we also recognize the premium fundamentals and attractive opportunities of Altera (and its programmable logic device brethren Xilinx), and we wouldn't necessarily advise against entry at these levels for longer-term investors."

Altera (NasdaqNM:ALTR - News) warned that it would miss revenue estimates this quarter. The stock gapped down at the open, but it managed to close near the day's high. I bet some investors are regretting their sell decisions. I know it is not going to be easy to fill this big gap, but the stock has formed a bullish tail."

Jfh I am of the opinion that over the long term, companies like AlTR and XLNX will increase their market share. My reasoning is the technology continues to advance so the power of their chips continues to increase making them more attractive. However the entry cost to creating new chips also increases, raising the bar to anyone creating custom chips. So only applications with huge volume potential will go on to create chips.

For example, the IC project I am involved in today has over $1million price tag. It costs $800,000 for the masks ( hard tooling ). So the business model has to spread that cost over a very large production run to make any financial sense. The programmable chips naturally do that. Fewer applications can afford that kind of increasing tooling cost.
