SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Shares of Microsoft Corp. were upgraded by Banc of America Securities to buy from neutral, based on expectations for a strong fiscal 2008 thanks to completing a batch of expensive product releases. Banc of America Securities analyst Kirk Materne, in a note published early Friday, said that the world's biggest software company will likely see improving margin leverage in its coming fiscal year, thanks to having moved beyond product releases including Vista, Office 2007 and Zune. |

K/N - I think it might be, but the length of the play, and the likely return, do not interest me much. |

I have to admit the most recent pullback in MSFT interests me. Based on forward guidance I think MSFT is trading around a PE of 17? I understand MSFT is being hit on many sides but at $24 per share is has more than $3 cash, and no debt. Eventually Vista will be released. Anyone else think it may be a "Value" play? |

From TradingMarkets.com: Microsoft (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) is coming off it's lows of the day after a two-week pullback to short-term support at 27. Volume has dried up during the drop. This could mean that that the short-term downtrend has not triggered significant selling and that the stock may be setting up to resume its uptrend. |

Microsoft Corp. gained 43 cents to $24.88, lifting the Dow Jones industrials as the software company doubled its quarterly net income from a year ago, though revenue fell short of Wall Street's expectations. The company gave a stronger-than-expected profit outlook as well. |

Bill Gates is sitting pretty. He's the chairman of Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people )--in case you'd forgotten--and his software colossus posted results Thursday. Microsoft on Thursday said third-quarter earnings almost doubled from last year, when it incurred legal charges of $2.53 billion. Net income rose to $2.56 billion, or 23 cents per share, from $1.32 billion, or 12 cents per share, a year ago. Latest-quarter results included legal charges of 5 cents per share, down from 17 cents per share in the year-earlier period. The 2005 quarter also included stock options expensing which weighed on profit, according to The Associated Press. And with an eye to the future, the computer leviathan said Mobile and Embedded Devices revenue rose 31%, as Windows Mobile products enjoyed muscular demand. The firm's revenue all told fell short of Wall Street views, but Scott Di Valerio, corporate vice president and corporate controller, took it in stride. "Despite a mixed enterprise software environment, the quarter played out largely as we expected, and operating income and earnings per share results were in line with our expectations," the AP quoted Di Valerio as saying. He then augured a rise in revenue growth for fiscal 2006. Yes, such "peripherals" as Microsoft's MSN Search might pale besides the services of Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) and Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ); and its music offerings barely rate in comparison to Apple Computer's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) mighty iTunes/iPod combo. With its cornucopia of ubiquitous products, though, Microsoft still towers; and Gates sits pretty. |

Microsoft Corp., down 54 cents at $24.45 in the regular session, gained back 26 cents in after-market trading following the release of its earnings report. The software giant's earnings nearly doubled over last year, but its revenue failed to meet Wall Street expectations. |

"Microsoft MSFT Morningstar Rating: 5 Stars Business Risk: Below Average From the Analyst Report: " Management understands the importance of defending its wide-moat businesses and building economic moats in its narrow- and no-moat businesses. To this end, it has devoted around 15% of revenue to research and development… One of Microsoft's inherent advantages is that it generates more than $1 billion per month in operating cash flow. I saw a headline that Gates will donate his portion of the dividends ($3B) to charity. Good for him. |

JFH, I've taken a pretty large position in MSFT by playing the JAN06 30 calls. I also own some shares of the stock. I believe the options are very reasonably priced, due to lack of volatility in the underlying over the last year or two. I like the 10x leverage and the extended timeframe of the JAN06's. From a technical perspective, I like Friday's action, which saw a nice rise on the highest volume of the year (+1.59 on 258M shares). There's still some overhead resistance in the 28 - 30 range. I'm looking to add to (double or more) the JAN06 call position on a break through 30. At that point, it will probably be 32.50's or 35's rather than 30's. For both technical and fundamental reasons, I think the stock is set up for a nice move on the upside.
