MarketWatch Market Pulse: Cooper Industries continues to improve margins Wednesday April 20, 9:12 am ET By Michael Baron NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Cooper Industries Wednesday reported first-quarter earnings of $87.8 million, or 92 cents per share, up from its year-ago profit of $77.7 million, or 81 cents per share. Revenue rose 7.5 percent in the latest three months to $1.14 billion from $1.06 billion in the same period a year earlier. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson First Call was for a profit of 91 cents per share in the March period. The company noted that its margins continued to improve despite pressure from rising raw materials, transportation and energy costs. Looking ahead, the Houston maker of electrical products, tools and hardware forecast earnings of 98 cents to $1.02 per share in the second quarter, and left its outlook for a profit of $3.94 to $4.12 per share for the year intact. The stock closed Tuesday at $65.77, up 20 cents |
