Xilinx's Superior Business Model 05.17.05, 9:20 AM ET Tear Sheet | Chart | News J.P. Morgan Securities maintained an "overweight" rating on Xilinx (nasdaq: XLNX - news - people ) saying that "it should outperform due to its superior business model, returns on invested capital and high barriers to entry." The company presented at the JPMorgan Technology and Telecom Conference on Monday. The research firm said "we believe Xilinx is well positioned to have a leadership position in 90 nanometer technology as we estimate it is shipping nearly three times the number of 90 nm products as its nearest competitor, Altera (nasdaq: ALTR - news - people ). While we believe Altera has gained share with its low-end programmable logic device (PLD) products, our checks continue to indicate Xilinx dominates the high-end of the market." J.P. Morgan also praised the boost of Xilinx's cash dividend to 7 cents from 4 cents and noted, "PLD companies generate some of the best cash flow in the semiconductor industry." |

XLNX doing well also, to wit : UPDATE 2-Xilinx profit decline, but raises dividend Thu Apr 21, 2005 05:08 PM ET (adds stock movement) SAN FRANCISCO, April 21 (Reuters) - Xilinx Inc. (XLNX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , a maker of programmable microchips, on Thursday reported a decline in quarterly net income from a year-ago, when a tax settlement lifted profits, while revenue fell. Xilinx, whose shares fell 2 percent in after-hours trading, also raised its dividend to 7 cents per quarter, up from 5 cents per quarter. Earnings in the fiscal fourth quarter fell to $67.2 million, or 19 cents a share, compared to a year-earlier profit of $130.9 million, or 36 cents a share. Sales reached $391 million, down from $403.4 million in the same period last year. Wall Street, on average, had been expecting a profit of 20 cents a share in the quarter, according to a poll of analysts by Reuters Estimates. The chip maker forecast revenue to be flat to up 4 percent in the fiscal first quarter from the fourth quarter. Analysts on average had been expecting revenue of $393.6 million in the first quarter ending in June. Xilinx shares fell to $28.75 in after-hours trading, after rising $1.09 to $29.44 in regular trading on Nasdaq. |

From Forbes: Xilinx (nasdaq: XLNX - news - people ) will provide an update for the fourth quarter tomorrow afternoon. Analysts currently estimate fourth-quarter earnings of 18 cents per share and sales of $367 million. A.G. Edwards upgraded the chip maker in February to "buy" from "hold" based on an improving inventory outlook. "We think Xilinx will continue to work through the weakness in telecommunications infrastructure and industrial demand for a quarter or two," the firm said. "With the correction in end market inventories essentially complete by the end of the March 2005 quarter, we expect rising semiconductor demand will drive Xilinx's top-line higher through 2005." A.G. Edwards has a price target of $36 for Xilinx |

Chipmakers Xilinx (nasdaq: XLNX - news - people ) and Altera (nasdaq: ALTR - news - people ) will each provide business updates for the current quarter. Xilinx will discuss its fourth-quarter outlook on March 8 after the close of trading. Consensus estimates call for earnings of 18 cents per share on $367 million in sales. Banc of America Securities expects in-line guidance from both companies but noted that it prefers Xilinx over Altera. Last month, Goldman Sachs raised 2005 and 2006 earnings-per-share estimates for Altera to 55 cents and 68 cents from 52 cents and 65 cents, respectively. "We maintain in-line on Altera given the stock's premium valuation and our expectation that earnings momentum will likely remain tepid in the near term due to general market choppiness, high turns requirement and potential overhang related to upcoming employee stock options expensing," it said. "However, we also recognize the premium fundamentals and attractive opportunities of Altera (and its programmable logic device brethren Xilinx), and we wouldn't necessarily advise against entry at these levels for longer-term investors." |

XLNX not so hot: Xilinx cuts outlook, blames inventories in Asia Tue Sep 14, 2004 04:27 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Xilinx Inc. (XLNX.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , a maker of programmable microchips, said on Tuesday its quarterly revenue would fall in the current quarter, missing its target of 2 percent to 4 percent growth from the prior period. In a scheduled update, the San Jose, California-based company said it expected sales in the September-ending quarter to fall 5 percent to 7 percent. Xilinx said sales in Asia were hurt by excess inventories as well as "softening" domestic orders. |
