Associated Press Allied Waste Swings to 1Q Profit Tuesday April 26, 5:12 pm ET Allied Waste Posts First-Quarter Profit After Year-Ago Loss SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Allied Waste Industries Inc., the nation's second-largest trash hauler, said Tuesday that it swung to a quarterly profit after posting a loss in the year-ago period, when results were saddled by costs from repaying debt. First-quarter earnings were $17 million, or 5 cents per share, compared with a loss of $2.4 million, or 1 cent, the year before. Before payment of preferred dividends, net income rose to $24.7 million from $3 million last year. The company's earnings just missed the average estimate of 6 cents per share from analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. Revenue for the period totaled $1.31 billion, an increase of 2 percent from $1.28 billion a year earlier. On a same-property basis, volume grew 1.9 percent as average unit price increased 0.4 percent, Allied said. Allied shares fell 15 cents, or 2.1 percent, to close at $7.04 on the New York Stock Exchange. |

about AW from yahoo: "Allied Waste Industries (NYSE:AW - News) slumped more than 15 percent after the company missed second-quarter earnings estimates and cut its outlook for the year. J.P. Morgan cut the stock to "neutral" vs. "overweight" on the news. "AW's big new focus on its 'best practices' initiatives now makes the investment story one primarily about management execution," said analyst Amanda Tepper. While the new focus will probably leave the company well-positioned for the long term, it will also "meaningfully" reduce near-term earnings visibility, she said. Shares were last trading down 16.8 percent at $10.18."
