When I first starting working with PC's back in 1984, our computers had about 1/5000 the RAM (of the machine I just bought), 1/20000 the disk space (on external hard drives that we had to keep in the fridge overnight), crummy little CRT screens.... and cost about $20k in 2006 dollars. |

Thanks for the cogent argument. LOL> Is Dell actually losing ground to HPQ. I just bought a new home PC (first in 4 years) and no one could touch Dell when it came to price for the computer that I wanted. It is pretty amazing the price/performance point in computing today. |

Thanks for the cogentality. I think I'll stay away from it. |

Cogent? OK, I'll try... I covered my 1k-share short today (but kept my leap puts), but only because they are presenting at some conference tomorrow, and it is expected that they will be introducing some new thingie that they are producing in conjunction with Microsoft. It's hard to imagine that they won't pull out all the stops to make it a positive event, so I'd rather not be short at the time. Long-term, though, I'm guessing that they are in trouble. They are getting thumped on the high end by AMD, and they may start getting thumped on the low end by the Asians. What they do is not something that can be turned around overnight. It took a long time for AMD to gain ascendancy, and it will take a long time for INTC to gain it back, if they ever do. Citigroup's upgrade means squat. I'm almost surprised that they were the only ones, as these guys all want banking business with INTC and, even if they didn't, they don't want a $120B-marketcap stock going down the tubes. The neighbors might get scared. Oh, and one of these days, DELL is going to drop their Intel-only policy, and they'll do it soon, if they keep losing ground to HPQ. Public Heel.... Often wrong, but never incogent. |

Tycho, I personally would avoid INTC. I just think it is overpriced compared to so much that is out there I see no reason to own it. That doesn't mean that it will go down or that it won't go up, it will just do it without me. I prefer to own stocks that I can follow the fundamentals and figure out the pertinent news before (or at least at the same time) as everyone else. PH will have much more cogent comment on INTC in particular. |

INTC very close to a two-year low. Anyone think this might be a buying opportunity? (Apparently Citigroup does. They just upgraded it from hold to buy.) |

AN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Intel Corp.'s second-quarter earnings grew 16 percent and sales jumped to a record $9.23 billion Tuesday as the world's largest chip maker profited from the growing popularity of notebook computers. For the three months ended July 2, Intel earned $2.04 billion, or 33 cents per share, compared with $1.76 billion, or 27 cents per share, in the same period last year. Revenue rose 15 percent from the $8.05 billion reported in the second quarter of 2004. Analysts were expecting the Santa Clara chip maker to earn 32 cents per share on sales of $9.22 billion, according to a survey by Thompson Financial. In June, Intel raised its sales forecast to between $9.1 billion and $9.3 billion from its previous guidance of $8.6 billion and $9.2 billion. At the time, it attributed the improvement to strong sales of microprocessors designed specifically for notebooks. "Our investments in new products, advanced silicon capacity and emerging markets are paying off with growth that is outpacing the industry," said Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive. The results were announced after the close of markets. Earlier, shares of Intel closed at $28.71, up 48 cents. In the extended session, they lost 73 cents, or 2.5 percent. |

INTC doing very well: "Intel, the world's biggest maker of computer chips, rose 3.6 per cent to $23.45 in pre-market trading after it reported first-quarter profits up 25 per cent on strong global demand. The strong performance follows a difficult period for chip makers, who have seen their shares buffeted after a glut of production led to rising inventories and reduced pricing power. Intel's chief rival, Advanced Micro Devices, rode its rival's coat tails higher, climbing 2.1 per cent to $15.60." |

Intel was upgraded to "overweight" from "equal weight" at Lehman Bros. on the belief the semiconductor giant's business is tracking favorably in the near term, with fourth-quarter results possibly at the higher end of recently raised forecasts. |

Intel (INTC: news, chart, profile) fell 1.5 percent to $23.74. Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Michael Masdea became the latest in a string of analysts to downgrade Intel in the past week. He cut the chipmaker's rating to "underperform" from "outperform" and reduced his price target on the stock from $25 to $22. Masdea said growth in the chip industry would be increasingly driven by digital consumer and communications products, not the PC-oriented chips that Intel concentrates on. See full story. It's a great company. As an investor I'm holding it and perhaps buy more. If you're looking for a one-shot deal don't buy it. If you looking for a great investment for your golden years, accumulate when it's down and don't listen to the catastrophe-prone guys. |
