SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Oracle Corp. fared far better than analysts anticipated in its fiscal second quarter, easing worries that the sagging U.S. economy and slowing corporate spending on technology would drag down the business software maker. The Redwood Shores-based company said Wednesday that it earned $1.3 billion, or 25 cents per share, for the three months ended Nov. 30. That represented a 35 percent increase from net income of $967 million, or 18 cents per share, at the same time last year. If not for stock option expenses and the costs incurred in recent acquisitions, Oracle said it would have earned 31 cents per share -- four cents per share above the average estimate among analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. Revenue totaled $5.31 billion, a 28 percent improvement from $4.16 billion last year. Analysts, on average, had projected revenue of $5.04 billion., Even more important to Wall Street, Oracle's sales of software licenses climbed by 38 percent to $1.67 billion. Analysts had predicted gains in the 20 percent range. |

Monday The new trading week starts off with database software giant and serial acquirer Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) on the clock. The company expects to post earnings of $0.22 a share for its second quarter; it earned $0.19 a share a year earlier. Oracle has beaten Wall Street's estimates for five consecutive quarters, so at least it has momentum working in its favor. |

Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ) is set to report results for the fourth quarter on Thursday afternoon. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expect earnings of 28 cents per share on sales of $4.74 billion. In the year-ago quarter, the software maker reported earnings of 26 cents per share on sales of $4.06 billion. Morgan Stanley maintained an "equal-weight" rating on the stock on June 16 after Oracle announced positive fourth-quarter guidance. "The significant outperformance shown by Oracle in their preliminary fiscal fourth-quarter license numbers, in the face of a difficult spending environment, will force investors to revisit their expectations of both Oracle's application business and the overall applications market," the firm said. |

Investors have recently shown ambivalence towards Oracle, with the share price fluctuating between $12 and $13 for the past four months. But Piper Jaffray thinks the stock is poised to break out, and labeled it as one of its more attractive picks for the year. "We continue to think Oracle is one of the most interesting stocks to own in 2006," Piper Jaffray analyst David Rudow wrote in a recent report. "The shares are very cheap compared to the comparative group, and we think this disparity will improve as investors focus on fiscal 2007 earnings and the growth potential for the company." The analyst maintained an "outperform" rating and $17 target price on Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ). |

Oracle To See Earnings Growth Of 10% To 15% 06.01.05, 9:57 AM ET Tear Sheet | Chart | News Morgan Stanley reiterated an "overweight" rating and $17 target price on Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ), saying the stock still looks attractive, with mid-single-digit organic revenue growth plus margin expansion driving 10% to 15% earnings growth. The research firm said surveys point to strength in Oracle's database business. "The 10g product cycle is set to enter its strongest phase over the next year, with 35% of our sample planning to upgrade," Morgan Stanley said. "Database option adoption also continues to look robust, and the long-term outlook on market share looks stable for Oracle." Morgan Stanley estimates Oracle’s database market share to be flat to slightly up within the installed base over the next three years. "Our survey and anecdotal evidence points to a more mixed applications business, especially in the acquired PeopleSoft business," Morgan Stanley said. "We have heard of a number of PeopleSoft employee departures in recent months, as sales territories have been re-assigned," with competitors such as SAP (nyse: SAP - news - people ) being aggressive in trying to lure away top talent. The research firm lowered the new license forecast contribution from PeopleSoft to $40 million from $75 million per quarter. In addition, Morgan Stanley slightly lowered the fiscal 2006 earnings-per-share estimate to 73 cents from 74 cents, and the revenue estimate to $13.7 billion from $13.8 billion. In its coverage of enterprise software, Morgan Stanley rates also at "overweight": SAP, Business Objects (nasdaq: BOBJ - news - people ), Mercury Interactive (nasdaq: MERQ - news - people ), and salesforce.com (nyse: CRM - news - people |
