EW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - Network equipment maker Tellabs Inc. (TLAB.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday posted a second-quarter profit that beat expectations because of stronger-than-expected gross margins, and the shares jumped about 5 percent. Profit fell to $41.1 million, or 9 cents a share, beating analysts' average expectation, as compiled by Reuters Research, by 4 cents. That compared with net income of $49.6 million, or 12 cents a share, a year earlier. "The gross margin was better than we expected," said Robert W. Baird analyst Kenneth Muth. He said the strength came from the access business, which sells products to phone companies such as Verizon and BellSouth, which are spending billions to build fiber optic networks to deliver television and high speed data services. "It's likely the upside came from the fiber side of the business," he said. Revenue rose 52 percent to $463 million, hitting the high end of the range of analysts estimates. Excluding restructuring and other charges, amortization of purchased intangibles, deferred stock compensation, and long-term investment impairment charges, Tellabs reported earnings per share of 13 cents. Shares rose 44 cents to $9.33 in premarket trade on Inet. |
