A spam post for a gay porn site was removed and the IP address (212.106.129.12) of the poster has been blocked. If anyone has a problem with that let me know.

Just posted this because I'm tired of seeing the invading spammer poker casino 852 still listed as the last poster on this board. Nice job of making him go away, Super!

SCON is doing the dead cat trick today. First they post the first profitable quarter ever, then a couple companies merge and another gets a bit distracted, orders vanish suddenly, and they are crushed under the feet of elephants - odd, and seemingly counterintuitive.

Kodak's earnings conference call is at 9AM today.
It rose sharply yesterday. I don't think expectations are very high, so it might have some nice upside today. I got in a couple days ago @ $26.02

"Super - I'm inclined to agree with the arboreal slob"

I think that's the first time in four years.

"SUre would be nice to find a foolproof way to play such situations.'

I think the only way to do it would be to assess the reason for the 30% drop. Was it justified, or was it a knee jerk reaction to a relatively unimportant event. I'm always leery of canned programs that treat all situations the same. They are better at revealing what has already happened than what will happen in the future.

PH - regarding that study you did...
Were you strictly looking for long opportunities or did you check for shorting candidates too? I think that was before the bubble. My own impression is that dead cats keep sinking and "idiot doomed coyotes" (30%+ rise in 1 day) sink too. I wonder if there's a volume related thing where folks who jump in quick decide to get out over ensuing days and weeks. SUre would be nice to find a foolproof way to play such situations.

I had some GLW once. I think they sold off a lot of their businesses (like corningware dishware, and perhaps some others) to concentrate on optical fiber. Then optical fiber cratered. No idea what they've been up to lately. Once they were a top notch glass science outfit. Maybe they still have some creative talent somewhere, maybe not. It seems recently profit eludes them. On the other hand, their share price has gone up this year, I have no idea why, didn't check recent news.

GLW looks like a dead cat that has been doing lots of bouncing from it's chart. A once high flyer from the bubblemania daze.

Super - Several years ago I did an extensive study of dead cats' post-drop behavior. I don't think there was anything playable. There certainly was not any kind of general rebound...

Super "In case everybody but me has forgotten, the original definition of a "dead cat" was a stock that dropped 30% or more in one day, if I remember correctly"

That might have been the original definition, but I also use the term (perhaps incorrectly) to mean
stocks with a long term positive track record that suddenly drop to a multi year low in a short period of time. Perhaps I should call that something else.....It's sort of like dogs of the dow, except the drop is much more drastic.

Dead Cats -
In case everybody but me has forgotten, the original definition of a "dead cat" was a stock that dropped 30% or more in one day, if I remember correctly. As I recall, speculation that dead cats would bounce proved unreliable at best, and often as not they tended to keep going down after a big hit - the best anybody reported was a possible 15% gain in the 90-180 days following a drop, and I don't recall hearing a widespread concensus of agreement on that.

Super,

It's actually rebounded a bit over the last few weeks, but like you say, it might be better to wait until after the end of the year. I'm going to keep my eye on it at any rate.

I don't see em (EK = Kodak) going out of business but it seems there is a LOT of upheaval in the photography market with digital coming close to taking over from film the way CD's squeezed out vinyl. If they can keep up they should make it in the long run. Certainly they rarely show losses although their profits recently ain't stupendous. Seems like some other photography stocks are selling at higher multples, making Kodak a possible value play.

Just off hand I suspect people will keep selling it for a tax loss til almost January. I think I wouldn't jump in right now. But what do I know???

Does anybody have an opinion on EK? They are finally getting into digital. I'm thinking they may be a good turnaround candidate. Plus they pay a decent dividend.
