Just thought it would be nice to post something here at Super's Place. Let's see . . . maybe I'll post a pic. Here's the Eureka County Courthouse in Eureka, Nevada. Built in 1879, it is still functioning as an active courthouse. Eureka's not far from GMO's Mt Hope moly property.

Super, Sorry to hear of your recent medical procedures, but very glad that they were successful. Were you previously aware that this condition existed or some recent problem that made the docs dive in there and do it? In any case wishing you well and a speedy recovery. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers |

General question. I noticed that some letters between SEC accountants and Attorneys for an issuer are posted on the SEC web site, along with regular filings such as 10Qs, Forms 4 and etcetera. The SEC accountant asks for explanations concerning what I think are very questionable practices. Is it unusual for the SEC to upload letters such as this and does the posting of the letters indicate anything? Wakky |

Fidelity charges between 6% and 11.5% based on debit balance. The lower the balance, the more they charge. From $100k to $500k, they charge 9.075%, but you have to have a pretty big account just to be allowed to borrow that much... |

I think I'm paying ~10% at Schwab, if that helps. ScottTrade has a purported comparison of their rates to others at http://www.scottrade.com/online_broker_comparison/ but I'm not sure it's 100% legit. Seems most brokers charge roughly similar rates, often varying with account balance. CYA, don't gamble what you can't afford to lose, and all that good advice. |

My Broker, Brown, was bought by etrade, and the margin rates are now higher. (substantially so). I am looking to save several thousand a year in margin costs by switching brokers. I think that given my level of trading and amount of margin, that the main consideration is just having the lowest margin rates and on line trading of stocks and options. The cost of trading is miniscule compared to the margin costs. Anybody have suggestions on where to find the best margin rates? M |

Wakky, I suggest a muni bond fund from your mom's state. Some pay as much as 5% tax free, with very little risk. |

Wacky - Most of my money is in real estate and CD's, CD-like retirement funds, municipal bonds (just to be perverse and pay zero to the feds), etc. I buy mutual funds with some of the interest, just to gamble a little. Your stepdad should probably consult an estate planner if he expects to check out soon and has not talked to one previously. |

Thanks, Heel. The issues you brought up are very helpful. I was concerned about the fact that rates may still be rising, but hadn't thought of short term issues. The fact that Treasuries are unsafe, considering that they pay less than inflation, is something I wasn't aware of, if I may dangle my paritcipal, if that is what "of" is. I was also wondering about global funds and will look on Everbank and specifically at PSAFX. 3 month Everbank CDs actually have an annual rate of 4.97% which yields 5.10%. PSAFX? You bad boy, managed by David W. Tice and Associates. I will take a closer look at it. No load is always inviting. I recall now that my fairly business like Uncle advised his wife to keep her money in CDs, no more than $100K in any one bank, to stagger the dates of maturity and simply redepositing the money where it paid the most. Thanks, again, Heel. I hoped you would respond to my inquiry. Wakky |

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what are the safest bonds or what bonds are very safe and pay better interest? Perhaps a bond fund is a better idea. Depends on what you mean by "safe". U.S. T-bills are generally considered to be absolutely safe. They aren't, of course, but if the U.S. ever defaults on its debt the world financial system will collapse and no one's bonds will be worth anything. However, if by "safe" you mean "guaranteed to earn a real rate of return" (greater than inflation), the T-Bills are, by my definition, about as unsafe as it gets. They're paying a little under 5%, and inflation right now is higher than that (once again, IMO, and also depending very much on what one has to buy). Can inflation go down? Can it go up? Yes to both, but the danger, long-term, is probably more on the upside. I'd never buy bonds, but if I did, I would go as short-term as feasible. When the 30-year rate is barely higher than the 2-year, what's the point to taking on all that extra risk for hardly any more return? In fact, I think I'd probably stick with CD's. More, I'd diversify into foreign bonds, in particular Canadian-dollar and Swiss-franc denominated (but pick whatever currency you think will hold out best compared to the $US). You can find lots of foreign-currency bonds at Everbank. For a foreign-bond fund, I think I would go with PSAFX, and let them decide which currencies to bet on. Super, Forgive me if this doesn't belong on this board. I don't know if any here address bonds. My step-father is talking about buying a bond yielding about 5% to provide my 81 year old mother with some income, as he is not long for this world. She will be living on that and what she may earn from a very small stock portfolio. (At her age, I don't think I like the idea of her owning any stocks.) Does anyone have any suggestions as to what are the safest bonds or what bonds are very safe and pay better interest? Perhaps a bond fund is a better idea. My sister claims to have some kind of fund or plan that guarantees her 7%. I will have to ask her about that and it may be that is what it guaranteed if you joined the plan back when. TIA. I suspect that French internet operators add a few extra bits at random here and there to the data stream to protect their sophisticated customers from boredom. Confess, jfh, if everything were perfect wouldn't it be a bit uninteresting? |

Maybe it fixed itself (more like the host fixing whatever was busted, I suspect). If it starts to plague us I'll temporarily interupt the email notification feature again. EVERYBODY, please report any weirdness - this thing is an intermittant bug and I can't depend on my own experience alone to indicate the status of the board. Try to copy the text of the page and report it either here or to admin@11wall-west.com if you get crazyness on your screen. |

PLEASE REPORT PROBLEMS Email notification has been re-enabled after the recent problems. KN says he got the problem again but I'm not seeing it after many test posts. I need to know what other users are seeing. For the time being it seems to be an intermittent glitch and I really want to try to track it to it's lair and kill it. If you see anything that looks like an error message or an email notification screen you shouldn't be seeing, please let me know. |

KN, can you try it a few more times here? I need to know if it's topic-specific. I'm going to try posting over at the energy board to see if it bites me there. |

email notification is re-enabled and the system seems to be working OK. This suggests the problem was a transient host upset, cuz I didn't fix anything. If anybody has the email notification screenofdeath problem again please let me know ASAP. |

Super - It said "e-mail notification" and had what looked like a very long URL on the left side. If you remove the restriction, I can try it again and let you know, although I don't know why what I get would be different from what you get. |

Can anybody describe the screen or mesage they were egtting when they ran into the email notification brick wall? What I get is some sort of page that says email notification and never seems to finish loading. If I knew more about what was happening it might help fix it. |
